Hi all, I just got a Samsung T5 to use as a bu hd for my 2018 mbp. I installed the software that came with drive as directed, but now when i use Superduper to bu my mbp hd the T5 does not show up on list. Using get info, it's formatted as ExFAT. Should i just erase and reformat with DU as a normal mac hd? Thanks for any help.

Never install software to connect a drive of any kind. If you can, delete the Samsung software. Then simply use Disk Utility to reformat as HFS+.

Agree with chabig - set a number of these up - first thing I do is format (unless I have one that needs to read on a PC) the software is useless IMO

Did you install the T5 software using the security option to password protect it?

It is up to you if you want to use the Samsung software or not, but it does serve a couple of purposes. It password protects the drive if you wish and it notifies you of and installs firmware updates to the drive. There have been a couple updates in the time I have owned mine.

I enabled it on my own MBP, but if I recall the instructions leave out a key step for HS and Mojave. After installing the software you have to go into settings—>security and privacy—>accessibility and unlock the padlock. Click the + sign under “allow apps below to control your computer.” Add the T5 software to the list. Close the padlock, remove the drive and reboot.

The next time you attach the drive, the software should open, detect the drive and ask for password if set and indicate if any firmware is available.

Agree with others above.

UNINSTALL the Samsung software.
Use Disk Utility to ERASE the ENTIRE drive to Mac OS extended with journaling enabled.

Then use it that way.
Things will go MUCH better!

That's a good point about firmware. But I would stick with FileVault encryption over a drive vendor's.

Either way, the T5 uses AES 256-bit hardware encryption, built into the drive. The software only adds another layer of security should you choose to enable the additional password protection to the drive access.

It's not so much the quality of the encryption I'm concerned about but my level of trust in the vendor.
