Hey everyone,

I have a question, which I was not sure of where to ask so I just put it in this forum. My question refers to connecting to the internet through a router, using WAN and DHCP.

I actually got a family friend to make our internet connection, and what he did was that he plugged in the cable going to modem into one of the 4 LAN plugs. He also told me never to plug it into the WAN plug (no idea why, never answers when I ask why!). Now usually I have to create separate connections on my windows PC's and my own MBP. In other words I have to start my internet connection before I can use the internet (on my OS X it starts by itself). But from what I have understood, if I plug it into WAN it is a different process, not sure if I am correct but the computer generates its own IP address automatically without me telling it to do so. Is this true?

Also I gave it a try; everything seemed to work fine, until I tried connecting to my internet from computers. As an example I tried on my MBP, I disabled connection using PPPOE and enabled it through DHCP with automatic or Dynamic IP. Also at the bottom it stated something liked, configure IPv6.

No when i tried to use the internet, it wouldn't work as in would not load web pages when I opened Safari. When I tried it on my Windows PC same problem. Could anyone maybe speculate a solution, or point me to some good articles I could use to find more information or solution? Thanks a lot. Also sorry if this was the wrong place to ask.
