iPod touch Need help

So my friend wants to give me his old ipod touch 1g for 10$ because he got a new ipod 4g but the problem is that it comes up with a ERROR 1403 WHITE SCREEN A1213 when he trys to load it up and he doesnt know want to do. So he said if i could fix the error he will give it to me for free so how do i fix this:confused::confused:!!!

Here is a pic of the ipod in question on the bottom there is a crack with black I do not know what to do with that
