The icons you see are disk images, which are basically files that the operating system treats as mini-partitions. You can "delete" them by selecting the eject icon next to the partition in the Finder sidebar or by dragging the icons to the trash. You can then delete the .dmg files associated with them, which contain the actual data.

More info is available in the Mac Guides section of the site.

Need help with mac disks

I need help with the mac disks. I have 2 questions about them: How do you delete them, and is there a way to install something without installing the disks or voulmes.

What your picture shows is called a DMG or Disk Image file. These are common file types when you download programs because of the "Package" nature of an OS X app. Anyway, what you do is you load the DMG to your desktop (as your picture shows), drag whatever program is in that DMG file (i.e. Google Earth or Skype) to your Applications folder or wherever you want really, and then you would eject the DMG by method stated by the other replies in this thread (Cmd-E, drag to trash, or right click and Eject).

After that you can throw away the DMG file because you have now installed the program. It may seem to simple, but yes, dragging and dropping is a method of installation on Mac OS X.
