Hello all. I have an iPhone 3GS which I purchased just over a year ago and did not purchase apple care (i.e. I believe it is out of warrantee). My original device began exhibiting an odd behaviour where it would freeze (sometimes multiple times a day) when I would lock it. The only solution would be to hard reset the device. Not even plugging the phone into a computer helped (I have a mac if you're interested). Now this device also had terrible signal issues where it would randomly lose a connection and would often not regain a connection after being in a place with no service. Apple replaced this device many months ago.

Fast forward to today and Ive noticed that my new device is now doing the same freezing behaviour and it has been increasing in frequency. It also is starting to sometimes not regain a connection after being out of service. Now I brought it into an Apple store and the Genius (not meant sarcastically obviously) told me my OS had some bugs in it and we did a restore from a backup. He told me to come back if I was having any more problems. Now the phone worked fine for a bit but now the problems are back.

<TLDR>
I now assume that the problem lies in my backup so I have decided to perform a complete wipe and not restore from my backup. But I want to save my SMS conversations. Now in Apples restricted OS I do not have the access to this file so it seems like ill be forced to jailbreak my phone to get those files before restoring. Im just curious about your thoughts about this process and whether I should take my phone in one more time (it has definitely been a year since the original purchase but not since the replacement).
</TLDR>
Thank you!
