if you have 2 on HOLD calls and you MERGE them. does it cost money? I have AT&T if that matters. with data/minute plan and 200txts

I Need Help Plz!
I Have An Unlocked First Gen Iphone That Does Not Have An Internet Plan On It Because I Basicly Only Want To Use It As A Phone And Text Msg. I Have Edge Turned Off But When My Wifi Isn't Connected The Edge Symbol (blue E) Is There In The Top Left Corner. Even Tho Edge Is Off Is It Still Connecting And If The Symbol Is There, And I Getting Crazy Charges? Plz Help!
