So my old macbook pro is asking for 500$ in repairs, and I'm stuck on my friends G4 until I get a new one... I'm a journalist, so my primary use for computers is internet and word processing (so a G4 is usable), but my casual uses, which border on work, are filmmaking (FCP), and web development (photoshop/flash), I also enjoy gaming from time to time, all of which can't be done on the G4. needless to say I was looking forward to these new models, but at the moment though I'm thinking of waiting... my reasoning being:
while i like the GPU differentiation between Macbooks and macbook pros, (also all my external harddrives use firewire) the performance gap doesn't seem to be large enough to warrent a macbook pro buy.
Given all the rumors floating around about new chips being inserted by Macworld, it could give a little extra reason for the upgrade. (I bought the macbook pro when it first came out, only to see it upgraded 2 months later)
Also, I'm in China right now, where there's a 200$ tariff on imported computers, and I'll be back in the US around January (but this problem can be got around)
The downside being:
Working on someone else's G4 is massively inconvenient.
Who knows what the update will be?
I guess there's also the possibility of getting a cheap refurb and then upgrading in 2 years.
Any thoughts?
