Hi,
I would need your opinion on the MBP 15-2017 16 Ram and 512 SSD.

Apart of the keybord issue, that we all know.

My friend is looking for this machine as he loves 15 inches screen.

Question is what would be the right price to pay for a top grade unit.

All opinions are welcome!

Thanks!

If they can wait, wait for the 14" which will likely be announced list WWD. but may not ship until months later.

Hi. Yes heard about the new 14 and 16 inches model coming with the new M1 or M1X.
But I think my friend needs it now, the 16 Inches gets our of his budget so thats why he thinking of the 15.
We based in Europe so prices sometimes could get crazy, if we get some opinions and ideas he could make up his mind.
Thanks.

That model and spec sell for around €1200-1250 used in Germany on eBay. Sometimes more or less. It depends on the condition and seller reputation. That's the price is expect to pay. Although I'm sure it will carry depending on where in Europe you are. So, I'd check local sold used Macbooks on eBay.

It's a tough time to *have* to buy unfortunately. If 15" is the minimum requirement then that's just what's going to have to happen. That said, the current 13" M1 MacBook Pro screen is nice and bright, the performance is good, and price is pretty good, and the battery life is excellent. With the full-screen modes and other tools MacOS provides (spaces, etc.) a 13" screen is cramped, but not the detriment to productivity that it used to be.

My suggestion would be to try a 13" M1 MacBook Pro and see if that would be enough - invest in a monitor for a bigger screen for use at home / dorm.

That solution has several advantages over the 15", with the unfortunate disadvantage of screen size obviously.

If 15 inch is the sticking point, I’d still recommend a 2015 MacBook Pro over a 2017. 2018 was when they finally started to get a little faster, but the keyboard problem is real. So if they can’t wait, I’d recommend an M1 13 inch Air, or a 2015 MacBook Pro 15, a model with the R9 GPU.

I would strongly recommend considering the 13-inch M1. If you are in Europe and you buy a 2017, when that keyboard goes up you could be left with an extremely large repair bill (i.e., large enough that you might debate whether or not it is economically-justifiable to repair the system.) If a 13-inch M1 does not work, then a used base model 16-inch is strongly advisable because it will likely be cheaper to own than the 15-inch you are considering. The 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros have a lot of issues and it is very hard to recommend them. If I had to buy the system you are considering, I might personally pay $500 for it but I would not pay what the market rates currently are.

For its original price? It's a paperweight. $3,000 and it becomes a space heater using its GPU. Throttling and lagging and heat are just unacceptable. If you find one used for less than that of an M1 Mac? Probably still not worth it. I'm ready to get rid of this piece of ****.
