I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2014. The damn machine is unbreakable, it was in rough shape three years ago like having a dead battery, dead speakers, hinges not closing but I fixed them all. Last week I installed Ventura with OCLP and it became even faster than it was on Big Sur. I checked SSD's health and except Wear Leveling Count which is at 31%, it looks fine. All I do is watch stuff and play games via Geforce Now.

The thing is I live in France and M4 Air costs 1100 euros in Apple Store (I can't buy on Amazon because I'm not French so I don't like their keyboard). In February I'll go to NYC and I can get an M4 Air for 640 euros, this is 460 euros of difference which equals to my plane ticket, so if I buy a Macbook my ticket will be free in a sense. 😂 However, I don't really need it, except if I open my laptop's lid one morning and see that it is dead, then I would regret not buying. I can also play GTA IV on M4 via Crossover probably. Also I'm not sure if the warranty is valid in France for a US bought Macbook.

If I get one, I'll use the old one as a TV box but it'll be overpowered for this task. As you see I'm already half convinced but I'd like to hear some arguments for a new laptop.

There has been a tremendous amount of improvement in 11 years.

Apple now has their own chip, and it’s very solid, fast and reliable. But it is not Intel so running Windows is different. If you have specific software you want to run that is not Mac software, just ask in one of the MacOS areas here and someone will tell you.

My MBP 2020 had to be retired a couple of months ago due to a swollen battery, so I got the M4 Air. It's a marvellous machine, and I believe GTA IV should be playable via Porting Kit: https://www.portingkit.com/game/1596
Also, if you go down this route, make sure to unpack your new mac and start using it in the US, so as not to get slapped with VAT and import taxes when you come back to France.

I definitely wouldn’t bring it home in the box.

Bro, your 2014 MBP is living on borrowed time. It's a whole decade old. I think the NYC deal is perfect. I believe Apple's warranty is global for the first year (you have to check).
