Need some help connecting a USB HD to my router for easy access over multiple devices

Hey all,

I have a D- Link DIR-655 router. It has a USB input on the back and I would love to be able to plug my USB hard drive with all of my movies etc, on it into the router and be able to access it using multiple computers and other things such as my Apple TV (if possible). I'm a tad confused about how to go about this. I did a bit of research and it seems I have to use Finder and 'connect to server'. I tried that but it keeps telling me that it can't connect when I use my router's IP address.

I am running Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro and Lion on my desktop.

Can anyone explain how I would go about accomplishing what it is I want to do?

On my Netgear router I had to use the router config page to enable the USB storage. In my case, it shows in Finder as a "Shared" resource and I can connect right from there.
