Current setup:
So I went the Apple store to see the new Apple macbook Air. I have to say they are pretty sweet machines. The only thing from making the 11'6 a homerun was the battery life. I wish they fit a 7-10 hour battery life in the machine. But that said, I thinking of taking the plunge. But I am stuck with what i want to use it for. I travel about 8 times a year on long flights and usually use my ipad. It has been pretty awesome excluding the fact that it was annoying to play video files. At work it's nice to use Air Video to play from your macbook. But Like alot people said, the ipad is meant for consuming information. The macbook air is mean to produce because it's so much more capable. I use my macbook 3 main purposes, I do alot of torrenting (so its never off) and I usually keep the macbook at home (running) while I travel with my ipad. I use Logmein to remote connect back to my macbook to change torrent files and manage data.
I don't want to necessarily give up my ipad or my macbook. So here's the problem thats brothering me in my head? I could sell my macbook (probably get like 500 on ebay maybe). Use that money to buy a maxed out macbook air, but with no-support for TRIM, and the much more limited space in the macbook air, is that a wise decision? Assuming a 13 inch macbook air maxed out will be 1700 dollars, which then I would be spending 1200 dollars of my own money to get rid of one computer and buy another. It would seem more logical for me to keep my macbook 2.2GHZ and make that my workhorse. It never leaves my bedroom, its always connected to the monitor. So then I would then get the 11.6 version (lowest processor possible) because then it doesn't replace the MB.
Looking at all the options, Do I really need 4GB ram on the 11'6 and 128GB SSD? I think the 4GB ram would bother me not to get it because you only have one chance. Will I use 128GB of space? I haven't decided what I want to put on this computer. I like to watch video. Tons. and my macbook can't process 1080p MKV's (I used my WD LIVE to handle that ).
Would it be smarter to sell the macbook 2007 laptop- get a mac mini. and then spend the bare minimum on the macbook air. Leave the mini at home that runs as server and other tasks. And take the macbook on trips.
The problem I have is, you upgrade here and you upgrade there...soon, you'll spending more than you planned. I would love to keep my ipad because of the software I have invested + it's the most ridiculous battery powered device+ I think its a better web experience than a computer.
I've read through the boards and every is using it differently. What do you think is the best setup while minimizing cost and redundancy?
Thanks.
Macbook (late 2007) 2.2GHZ with integrated Craphics. 4GB of Ram with 320 7200RPM Drive + 1 TB external.
