Hey, I'm loving the dock here, but I'd like to have the checkerboard on the dock. Is this possible? I'm not enjoying the use of Photoshop, I'm stuck on the poor man's version: Paint.net.

I've got idea how to make this happen. :)

Not sure if this is what you want, but there it is nonetheless.

Holy cow that's gorgeous! How in the world do you do that? And I wonder if Paint.net can do it? Muchos muchos gracias amigo!!!!! :)

not sure what paint.net can do

but to do this all you gotta do is put the layer of the checkerboard over the dock, set its opacity to <100 (play with it until it looks like you want), and then make the dock your selection, but the checkerboard your active layer, invert the selection, and the use your eraser wildly until everything is gone. Since the selection contains everything except the dock, the eraser won't work on the parts that are over the dock, and will leave them behind.

creating that

Okay, thanks for the tutorial. Paint.net can do that, I just took forever and a day to figure it out! :)
