Ok so after closing an app with the red X button (iCal for instance), and I switch to a different space. When I click on the iCal icon, it reverts back to the previous space. How can i have the app open on whichever space i'm on without first having to quit the app? (btw, i have not assigned spaces for iCal)

In general, the "red X button" doesn't close an app but just closes the window, so the app is still running. That's why when you click on the app it switches to the space the app is running in. You need to do a Command-Q in the application (or right-click on the app in the Dock and select Quit) to shut it off. As an alternative, you can have the app appear on all spaces simultaneously by dragging it to the list of applications that are to appear on all spaces, which is in the Spaces preferences in System Preferences.
