Hi,

I need a new external drive for my macbook pro.
I need 1.5TB of capacity and found the Seagate FreeAgent Desk.

But I am not sure if I should go with the Mac version which features a firewire 800 connection. Is it that much faster? And will the usb 2.0 interface be enough for 1080p playback?

Go for firewire, yeah it is faster. USB 2.0 is alright, but with firewire you can see the difference in speed. Hope that helps

I have no experience with the specific drive you reference,
but yes, Firewire 800 is noticeably faster than USB 2.0

I have both a FW400 and a USB2 external drives attached to my iMac, and 1080p video works flawlessly on both

Thanks for the replies :)
Any experience with the Mybook Studio drive from Western Digital then?

Just got a USB 2 external drive and I am very happy of its speed. I actually thought it would be worse... So if money is no object I would get FW800 but if I were on a budget USB 2 and FW400 are close and USB 2 is cheaper.
