I have an early 2008 iMac 24" with a 500 gb harddrive running snowleopard. I have a 1 TB WD mypassport which has 29 gb "free". The WD backups are up to date, although the other day it said the back up was not able to complete because there was not enough space. I played around a bit (have no idea what I did) and now the back up is working again.

However, time machine will not back up anymore because there is not sufficient space (only 29 gb). I thought time machine kept backing up and overwriting itself? It says it does so.

I think there was a WD update at some point and that may have been when time machine stopped working.

Should I be backing up only to "time machine"? If so, how do I do so? Sorry if I have not given enough info.
