for some microsoftian reason, there a half dozen current versions of XP out there, such as Home, Business, Professional, Select, Student, blabh ablabh . right now ms has vista out - but it's just the "business" version. what the hell does that mean? should buy that or wait for "home" in january? ms's website just says "Vista will help your business be more productive." woo-hoo. what kind of ****-tard in marketing comes up with that?

Vista has only been released to business customers. You can't buy vista as a home user yet.
With the XP versioning there are two main ones home and professional and the rest are all pricing schemes. You can get it cheap if you are a student basically.

There are 4 main Vista version planned http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/editions/default.mspx look there to see what you need.

and remember if you buy XP now you can upgrade to vista when it is released for a small fee (less than paying for it outright). http://www.microsoft.com/athome/techguarantee/worldwide.mspx
