I've got an iBook G4 running on 10.4.10, and I was told today by a fellow techy about this forum and the possibility of freeing up a fair chunk of my 40GB HD by deleting unneccessary language files and printer drivers that I'll probably never use, and if I do use, can always install from CD's.

If anyone knows what I can delete, please let me know, I'm anxious to free up some space.

Printer drivers can be found in /Library/Printers keep any manufacturers name that you actually use.

Then use Monolingual to get rid of languages.

Just got rid of it.. didn't really free up much. Anything else? I found the printer drivers but I'd like a second opinion as to which ones I'd be safest to delete, and which folders to leave alone entirely.

Delete them all if you don't have a printer. If you do delete all of them except the folder with the name of the manufacturer of your printer.

You may need to restart after emptying the trash.

On all of my units the disk space listed gets out of sync with what is truely available for some reason. (Activity Monitor gives the correct amount though.) (could be I'm still running 10.3.9.)

iDVD themes take up loads of space (over a gig)
garage band loops similar
if you do'nt use iWork, the demo takes over a gig
printers folder is over a gig
languages, over a gig (use monolingual for this)

that's about 5 gigs right there if you don't use those :D

you can get a program like WhatSize which can help you identify what is taking up the bulk of your hard drive and eliminate unnecessary files from there

Go through your apps one by one and delete languages. See the languages pane? Remove all the languages you don't use, and depending on your apps you could save up to a gig.

This is what Monolingual does, except Monolingual is a lot faster. :)
