I never install toolbars. They are almost always a risk, especially on Windows. I am appalled to hear that Safari on OS X supports toobars. Yuck. Whenever I search for software, brothersoft comes up near the top of the list. I try to avoid using brothersoft as a download site whether for Windows, OS X or Linux software. I guess it's just a personal preference.
Today I wanted pdf xchange viewer for windows and I used one of those "generic" download sites, similar to brothersoft and what do you know, it tried to install some sort of ask.com toolbar. When are these developers going to figure out I want the only the app and nothing but the app? They can out their toolbars where the sun don't shine.
I'm relieved to hear the uninstall worked. On windows, often freeware carries an adware or spyware payload. I've heard of more than a few Windows toolbars that were actually fronts for adware or even malware. There isn't a lot of malware on OS X (yet), but if it ever does surface, brothersoft will be one of the fastest places I would expect to pick it up. Be careful!
