i am going away on vacation for two and a half weeks and am not sure what to do about my powerbook. do i need to remove the battery and store it, or is it safe to leave it in? if so, should i completey shut the computer down or can i leave it in sleep mode?

Drain the battery down to 40%. You will be better off if you shut down the pbook.

From what I can tell according to Apple's site. 2 1/2 weeks isn't too long to keep it in your notebook.
Apple's Battery Site said:
Long Term Storage
If you don’t plan on using your notebook for more than six months, Apple recommends that you remove and store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life. Be sure to store the ejected battery at the proper temperature. (See “Notebook Temperate Zone.”)
Edit: You probably should turn it off though.

i've left batteries in powerbooks for months at a time. no harm done.

tho i'd be too addicted to leave my 'book at home :)
