Need to unlock 3gs running 4.1!

I've heard greenpoison will be able to hacktivate it. could someone please explain what hacktivating is, and how it's different from an unlock. I don't know if this helps but I pre-ordered the 3gs when it first came out so I think it's the old bootrom.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Seems greenpoison is for "4" devices which means 3GS and older are out. Normally, you have to active phone with official carrier sim through iTunes, but if it's hackactivate, you don't need to. It's not related to unlocking the phone.
