My 3 yr old 3GS has just died. Battery won't charge anymore.
I bought it unlocked. I did not unlock it.

I am getting a friends iPhone 4 later today. Not sure what FW or Baseband it is, yet, but hoping I can unlock it.
So much contradictory info on the net about what can be done.
Some Gevey sim for certain basebands, some say Ultrasnow...

I'm hoping I can figure out how to preserve a usable baseband and put 5.0 on it? I can live with 4.xx, but never having had 5.0 on my 3GS, I'd love to get iMessage and iCloud finally on tmo.

Any point in a good direction appreciated.

Well, this is not super helpful, but you'll have four options:
1. ultrasn0w unlock for older basebands.
2. Gevey unlock for basebands that are not very recent but are newer than the ones ultrasn0w supports.
3. If the iPhone is locked to AT&T, you could call them and request for it to be unlocked. This could take between a few minutes to a few weeks, depending on various factors.
4. No unlock.

Once you get the iPhone, check the baseband version and search for unlocks for it on the web. That's whats important for unlocks. The iOS version doesn't matter.

OS 4.2.1
Baseband 03.10.01
It seems a software unlock wont work on that baseband.
I'm gonna see about getting a Gevey Ultra Sim.

Unlocked it today with SAM. A couple of bugs to work out, but its a phone now!
