Hi all, I'm a Java/JEE/javascript/html5 web developer and I own an early 2013 15" rMBP (2.7/16/512) connected to an external 21" 1080p monitor. When I work I usually have like 8 or more applications open and lots of tabs on the web browser, so I have to switch a lot between MacOSX spaces, resize windows, move windows from one monitor to another etc.
With my current rMBP configuration everything runs smoothly so I don't complain about performance but I've been looking into modifying/getting a new configuration to gaining real estate and these are my posible options:
Option 1:
I'm thinking of getting a third screen, that is a second external monitor connected to my current rMBP, the problem with my current setup is that I would like to buy a 27" 4K monitor, but with my current rMBP having a nvidia 650m I would be able to use it at 24hz or 30hz at much, and we all know 30hz is ok for watching movies/videos but not for working because of the sluggishness, so I have a limitation on this posible configuration, another option might be buying an extra 1080p 21" and end up having 2 old-tech *blurry* monitors connected to my rMBP and gain extra real estate for about €120.
Option 2:
The other day I stopped by a MacStore and played with the new 27" retina iMac and thought, mmm I bet I could do my work using a computer like this with all this real estate for my apps, not to mention the beautiful 5K screen, but the price tag for the configuration I want is aprx €3200, If I bought an iMac I definitely would have to sell my current rMBP for say €1500 in order to recover some money and I would lose portability, and if I needed some more real state I could connect the remaining 21" monitor that I currently have to the iMac. The retina iMac is actually the best all in one desktop computer I've ever seen and it surely is a very nice option but the price is too high.
Option 3:
Buy the new 15" rMBP and a 27" 4K monitor and use it at 60hz with no problem and sell my current rMBP. With this configutaion I would spend €2800 for the rMBP plus €600 aprx for a 27" 4k monitor, that is a whopping €3400 price tag, by selling my current rMBP I could recover €1500.
Option 4:
Buy a refurbished 2014 rMBP that comes with the nvidia 750m and with a similar setup as my current rMBP, in the end I only need the 750m so that I can use a 4K monitor at 60hz, that would be €2250 for the refurbished rMBP plus €600 for the 27" 4K monitor and aprx €2850 in all, by selling my current rMBP I could recover €1500.
Most of you would say Option 4 is the best for me if I really want a 4K monitor, but what about future proof setup? am I missing something?, what would you add or change?, do you have a similar setup like the options I mentioned? pros and cons?
Thanks in advance.
