I copied over a SuperDuper! backup to an IMac I’m borrowing with an internal SSD.

During the copy process, I had an error in the post-copy process of the script (recovery, just as it was going to prebinding). The error had to do with the APFS file system on the SSD (SuperDuper! wasn’t playing nice copying from HFS+ to APFS). No problem, I thought, as you can always convert to APFS afterwards. So I had SuperDuper! erase the disk and copy everything over again.

The problem is that, once it was finished (and my High Sierra volume is working otherwise well), I’ve been unable to convert the drive to APFS. DiskUtility won’t let me make the change to the internal drive, even if I booted off of an external drive. Most online discussion suggests to then use recovery mode to run DiskUtility (as I get a com.apple.DiskManagment error if I try it with the OS booted). However, my internal disk doesn’t have a recovery volume! If I go into recovery mode, it opens the internet recovery disk, which just happens to be the version for Lion. There’s no option to make the conversion there.

Is there any way to make a recovery partition on a machine running High Sierra without deleting everything?

Thank you for any suggestions.
