Nehalem benefits from Snow Leopard more than last gen?

Like many of you, I'm trying to decide between the 2.26 or the last gen 2.8 octo. Snow leopard keeps being brought up in these discussions almost as if it will only benefit "new hardware" in the Nehalem-based machines? Is this true? I thought SL is going to increase the performance of ANY multi-core machine?
