Netflix for the Apple TV updated itself sometime between yesterday and today... between January 20 and January 21.

I've been using tvOS 13.4.8 because tvOS 14 breaks surround sound.

Netflix now crashes using 13.4.8; it won't launch. The new version of Netflix works normally using tvOS 14... but with no surround, of course.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Is anyone else experiencing the most recent Netflix update crashing using tvOS 13.4.8?

In what way does tvOS break surround sound?

I have been tvOS14 for ages now and have no issues whatsoever

LOL...14 breaks surround sound? Dude, just delete the app and reinstall it. There is nothing wrong.

There are many things wrong with tvOS 14. The surround sound in the computers app is broken. It is a known issue. If you use use optical outputs from your tv to your receiver you experience this issue. Play/pause doesn’t work consistently as well. Surround sound works fine in other apps such as Netflix and Prime. So I am keeping my AppleTV 4 at 13.4.8 on purpose. Everything works properly. But the latest update to the Netflix app causes it to crash upon startup in 13.4.8. I chatted with Netflix and was told to update to tvOS 14.3 to fix the problem. This is unacceptable. Netflix works on just about every device on the planet regardless of os. I still watch Netflix at 5 days a week at work on my ancient iPad 3 running iOS 9.3! I hope their developers get the fixed shortly. Even better than that... maybe Apple will fix these issues in tvOS 14 so I can finally update. Until then I have turned off Automatic update apps to keep this from happening to any other apps I use. I wish I would have done this before the 21st.

Tried reinstalling tvOS four times.

The issue persists.

Audio set to Dolby Digital 5.1 on the Apple TV.

No surround sound in the Computer Home Sharing app using tvOS 14.4.

No problems with 14.4 on my 4k box. The ATV output is connected to my receiver and the receiver to tv.

I don't recall experiencing any crashes with Netflix from tvOS 12 to 14.

What TV do you have? Are you sure that it converts 5.1 from the HDMI to 5.1 on the optical out? Do you get 5.1 from the TV on its own apps etc? I assume that your TV is also 4K? Do you get 5.1 from the other Apple TV apps? Is this only on the Computer Sharing app?

I have a Sony 4K television.

I'm not certain what the television does with the audio out signal.

The only thing I'm absolutely certain of is that surround sound works using the Computer Home Sharing app with tvOS 13.4.8 and not with tvOS 14.3 or tvOS 14.4.

On my entertainment system the Apple TV must be set to Dolby Digital 5.1 to have surround sound.

According to my receiver's display, aside from an app titled Surround Sound Check, surround works in everything except the Computer Home Sharing app.

Say... would you try something?

Settings --> Video and Audio --> Audio Format --> On --> Dolby Digital 5.1

Now... play a movie in the Computer Home Sharing app, a movie with AC3 surround sound. Perhaps try this...

3MB Video

When I do so it initially may play. Subsequently, when I pause the movie or attempt to scrub forward or backward, the Computer Home Sharing app freezes.

Movies with an AAC stereo track may be paused and scrubbed as normal.

When...

Settings --> Video and Audio -->Audio Format --> Off --> Auto

...and when I swipe down while playing an AC3 surround sound movie, the Languages menu is missing under Audio. This is important to me as I have many movies with different languages.

Also when set to Auto and while playing an AAC stereo movie, the languages movie reappears.

I will have a go at that, but it won’t be until tomorrow

I would assume if the tvOS is breaking surround sound, it would be for all apps, not just Netflix.

Please keep in mind that the app from Netflix is just as likely a culprit. The app itself may be out of date or the one with the issue. tvOS is just the OS, not all the apps you may have installed on your device.

If you believe it is the tvOS version that is incompatible with your system, downgrade it.

Unfortunately my Apple TV is a 4K model. It cannot be downgraded.

Nope... I am running a downgraded AppleTV 4 or HD because TVOS 14 breaks the surround sound on the computers app and not on Netflix, Prime and others. I have the same setup as worlddomination with my Appletv hooked up to a Sony tv and optical running to a Sony receiver. Everything was working flawlessly on 13.4.8 until the latest Netflix update which happed on the January 19th. Now Netflix will not launch on 13.4.8. When I reported this problem to Netflix via chat ... I was told to update to 14.3 or higher to fix the “known” problem. Which I refuse to do until Apple fixes the surround problems and freezing issue upon play/pause In tvOS 14. My brother has a couple of Appletv 4ks on tvOS 14 and they are freezing unless you set them to stereo sound. So there are different issues for the models but they are both related to the surround sound playback engine.

I'm having the same problem with our Apple TV 4 running TVOS 13.4.8 since the most recent Netflix update — Netflix immediately crashes when trying to open the app. I’ve restarted the the ATV and deleted & reinstalled the Netflix app to no avail.

FWIW I’m avoiding TVOS 14 because of Apple’s implementation of Picture in Picture. Specifically when you pause a video the PnP icon covers up parts of the closed caption. Most of the time I've paused the video to be able to read the closed caption. You can easily see this issue in Apple’s Tehran which depends on close captions for english speakers. Of course we don’t watch Apple TV+ for the same reason.

Hopefully Netflix will fix this soon. Meanwhile we will just use alternative streaming services and cancel Netflix on renewal unless it gets fixed by then.

Yes, and it is annoying. On my AppleTV (3rd gen) Model 1427 this happens at least once an evening of 2-3 hours of viewing. I see I’m on Apple TV Software v7.6.2 (8144) from the Settings menu. On this version the unit reports it is up-to-date on software.

As an aside, is there a way to determine the corresponding tvOS number? I see no mention in any setting.

I'm guessing Netflix didn't fix the crashing app issue on 13.4.8 and the only solution was to upgrade to TVOS 14 ?

I have music playback issues ( Apple TV plays back home shared music in surround sound unless you reboot after playing a surround movie ) and I would love to go back to 13.4.8 while it's still signed, but if Netflix won't work, then for household harmony I will be stuck on TVOS 14.
