Netshare and system wide proxy

Here is my question. when setting up the Netshare connection why is it that mail, Firefox 3, and who knows what else does not work if you setup the proxy under the network preferences tab. By doing this do it mean it is truly not system wide. Safari works, Apple update works, and I am sure some other things. Just kind of sucks cause I use Firefox 3.

I'm not complaining cause having Netshare is awesome just not sure why the setup is not system wide. Any idea's?

This is on Leopard of course.
