There are two things that I am trying to solve here, although both rely on network administrator privileges. I have a desktop iMac, and there is no network in existence in my home. I am the only user and I have established my user name and password, but the system will not recognize this as an administrator's credentials. I searched the forums here and found that several people are having trouble with administrator stuff, but the solutions I found indicated that one would have to bypass the visual start-up when the first blue screen appears with a command + S option. This does not work for my computer as the command function seems to be ignored and the system just starts like it is intended to--visually.
I'm a first-time Mac owner and bought my first iMac when Leopard was released. Mac visual stuff is easy to navigate, but I'm lost when it comes to some software things. The basics guide here is fine, but it starts too simply and I don't feel like weeding through it all to find whether there is something there to help me with my (admittedly lame) limits with this computer.
I tried to play a DVD for the first time, and the system popped up a dialog that I had to select the region. The "Set Drive Region" button is grayed out and I cannot do anything except scroll the region codes, cancel, or click the lock to make changes, which requires network administrator privileges. As I wrote above, my user id/password do not work for this. I clicked the help "?" and the only thing that I got there was an explanation about what region codes, etc. are. I tried just hitting the return key, and the DVD ejects without playing. This happens the same with any disc I have tried, and all are in region 1 (including the default for this dialog since I'm in the U.S.).
The second thing I've tried to do with administrator issues is to install Office for Mac 2004. I removed the trial version of this as instructed by the CD-Rom and I cannot go beyond the administrator credentials thing. I now have nothing installed that will let me read existing Word or Excel docs that I had from my old PC.
If I'm the only user, who is the administrator?
