My network just dies if I try to access a windows smb share, does anyone has a problem similar to this one?

Mac osx 10.4.8
Windows XP sp 1
no firewall, manual ip config on the mac, dhcp on the windows pc.
tcpdump on the mac reports it sending packets to the network but it stops getting response the only way to fix it is restarting my macbook.

thanks,
Leonardo Santagada

do you have Windows sharing turned on in your Sharing preferences on the Mac?

I think my problem was with parallels vm, I will try it when I get home

uninstalled both crossover beta and paralles, by the looks of ps ax I still have some programs running but they all seens to be standard mac stuff. Tried the tip to turn on windows share on the mac and I still get the same error. My conection dies and the finder is completely frozen only hard reseting the machine makes her go back to work.

No one has any tip to give to help me? no one had similar problems or any link to more documentation? Also how do I contact apple to try to get a fix?

i tried both with the finder and with connect to server (and using the ip) both to the same problem. And even more, if I don't connect at all, by just letting the windows connection option on it kills my network until I restart, then I have to disable it and restart it again.

here, this should help, its the last minutes before my computer completely hang:

do you have Windows sharing turned on in your Sharing preferences on the Mac?
no, its turned off. will it help?

No.. not if you're going from Mac (OS X) to a remote Windows box.

Windows Sharing is strictly for external sources to connect you your Mac via SMB.

Frist thing I'd do? Fix this:

Dec 7 17:26:34 localhost mDNSResponder: Couldn't read user-specified local hostname; using default “Macintosh-0017F226B634.local” instead

Second thing?

Dec 7 17:08:08 localhost KernelEventAgent[60]: tid 00000000 received VQ_NOTRESP event (1)
Dec 7 17:08:08 localhost KernelEventAgent[60]: tid 00000000 type 'smbfs', mounted on '/Volumes/c', from '//CASA;leonardo@192.168.1.21/C', not responding
Dec 7 17:08:08 localhost KernelEventAgent[60]: tid 00000000 found 1 filesystem(s) with problem(s)

It looks like your PC isn't responding.

Also.. try cifs, rather than smb. And don't specify workgroup or username or share.. just the IP.

The fact that when it hang I was using quicktime to see a movie file from the smb share does not matter right?

And this should shed even more light, all this network transitions are not right (i'm on a lan with fixed ip) , this is from DirectoryService.server.log:

No.. not if you're going from Mac (OS X) to a remote Windows box.

Windows Sharing is strictly for external sources to connect you your Mac via SMB.

Frist thing I'd do? Fix this:

Dec 7 17:26:34 localhost mDNSResponder: Couldn't read user-specified local hostname; using default “Macintosh-0017F226B634.local” instead

Second thing?

Dec 7 17:08:08 localhost KernelEventAgent[60]: tid 00000000 received VQ_NOTRESP event (1)
Dec 7 17:08:08 localhost KernelEventAgent[60]: tid 00000000 type 'smbfs', mounted on '/Volumes/c', from '//CASA;leonardo@192.168.1.21/C', not responding
Dec 7 17:08:08 localhost KernelEventAgent[60]: tid 00000000 found 1 filesystem(s) with problem(s)

It looks like your PC isn't responding.

Also.. try cifs, rather than smb. And don't specify workgroup or username or share.. just the IP.

tried that and still nothing, the good news is that waiting a while (5 mins or so) the finder stop trying to access the windows machine and unlocks so I can restart the computer. The problem with my connection getting killed still happens, I wish I could talk to apple about this.

Maybe try upgrading to XP SP2?

Maybe similar problem?

I started a new thread on my Windows networking issue when using BootCamp XP Pro.
Mine had to do with the NIC under Windows seemingly overpowering whatever I connect to. Like mine wants to talk gigabit and the others do not... Not sure.
My resolution (work around) is to use a hub/switch between my MBP and the other device (while in XP Pro).
While browsing the web, all is good, but while trying to install applications from the network, it seems to hang. Any large file transfers bog down/hang.
