Network Hard Drive Solutions?

Can anyone recommend a good network storage solution that is compatible with both Mac (10.4) and Windows XP Pro? More importantly, how would one go about backing up a network storage drive (say to a 2nd drive) on an automated, recurring basis? The data I will have on that drive is very important to our family (photo's , video, etc.)
