Network issue

Got an issue with my iPhone 4s. Whenever I go underground it keeps showing I have 1 bar of reception when I know there's none. Then when I get out it takes ages to pick up the signal again. I know this isn't an issue with my sim or the operator as I've tried usin my sim on a samsung galaxy s 2 and I didnt have any issues. Is there anyway to fix this? It's really annoying having to go into airplane mode just to get the signal.

Define "takes ages to pick up the signal"

Sometimes 5-10 minutes. I sometimes manage to walk from the station to work which is about 15 mins and there's still no service or it's stuck at 1 bar and I can't do anything I.e browse the web etc
