So! I have installed a (ZYXEL) NAS drive and so far it's working as I had hoped. Good news!

and more good news: I have had some good luck with attaching USB3 drives via the USB3 slots. So that's also good!

one issue re the USB3 drives mounted via the NAS: I can't figure out the permissions.
the drives are somehow "read only."
(so I can't add or change anything, as you know.)

my question: what can I do to change the permissions so I can have access to read and write to these drives? (attached via USB3 to the NAS and then mounted on the network.)

grateful, as always, for suggestions.

thanks!

Thinking that you should reformat/erase them first (for appropriate filesystem)

oh thank you!

that does make sense.

right now, the way I use these drives is to move them back and forth between connecting them via USB3 and the NAS, but perhaps I should make them full-time NAS drives. hmmm... something to think about.

is there any way to make them read-and-write-able WITHOUT reformatting?

thanks!
