okay, so I've got a random question regarding setting up a network of drives and sharing. My powermac's video card is starting to go and so I'm using the laptop quite a bit more (it's also an intel laptop vs my ppc powermac).

It used to be that I had my photo library on the power mac, but at some point in time I moved the library to an external drive so that I could use it with either the desktop or the laptop. My music library followed suit sometime after that as well. Then, the drive got to the point where it was getting full so I got a second hard drive for the music.

Since I've upgraded aperture to version 3, only the mbp can be used for aperture. My aperture library sits on a 1tb external with a fw 800 interface, but my mbp is the first gen with only a fw 400 port. The aperture vault is on the powermac's internal 1tb drive (powermac's system on a separate 300gb drive). My music is on a 500gb external with fw 400.

Now, here is my question, if I do a ethernet connection from the mbp to the pm and plug the 1tb external into the fw 800 of the pm and the 500gb external into the fw 400 of the power mac will I get a better connection than plugging the fw 800 drive into the fw 400 port of the mbp? Is the overhead from the ethernet through the powermac to the fw 800 bus to the external significant, or is it negligible? i don't mind so much about the bus speed of the music drive since it's just music.

Second question, how can I mount 5 drives at once automatically when I plug in the ethernet cable?
