Network / server icons on desktop show up and disappear

Newbie here. Everything was fine then one day I see a two new icons. One titled 'servers' and the other 'networks'. Then after a shutdown, they both have disappeared. Does anyone have an idea what causes such a thing?

Sounds like you were connected via File Sharing to two locations, named servers and networks. When you shutdown or restart those connections are disconnected requiring you to reconnect to them again to gain access.
