Network setup (Mac and PC)

Hi, so again I am an absolute rookie on the mac

What I want to do is have a network so I can have both my mac and windows pc connected.. if that makes sense.

Now I currently have both of the computers using the same router to get on the internet. But have had an amateur search to try and find them in the same network but no success.

When I go to finder I dont have a network tab, but I do have a folder in my harddrive which says "Public".

This is all the info I have... please help. And get it basic :S

Yea sure, I want to be able to share files between the two computers. Ie. if I have a file on my windows pc then I would like to be able to access that through my mac, and vice versa if its possible.
