Let me preface this by saying that I know quite a bit about linux/apache/php configs, but this is the first time I've ever tried to setup a client login relationship.

So I've setup Open Directory as a master, with DNS and created a network user. Given that user a home folder (first just as a path "/Volumes/FastStore/Users", then later as a afp:// share).

On the Lion client machine I bound it to the OD server using the SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginOptions, so from terminal I can "ssh {ip address} -l {user name}" and login and nano/create files in the home directory, and I can "id {user name}" and see the correct numbers as given by the OD server.

However, on the client machines login window, "Other" trying to login as the user just makes it spin a while and then popup the message "can't login, an error has occurred"

What am I missing here?

EDIT: Solved!
Setting dns to point to the server from the client resolved it. (imho oddly)
