How stupid can you get?!
Look at this video! (Need WMA player)

VIDEO

The reaction happens so fast once it starts! I can't imagine getting almost vaporized chlorine everywhere on me including the eyes. I love that, right before one of the kids says that it isn't dangerous. :p

With dryice bombs it normaly takes a few min to work up enough pressure to blow up a bottle that size.

I thought I would put this here because it is kindof "news."

wow oh wow oh WOW was that really dumb of those kids. i was thinking the same thing revenuee... what happened to that poor kid???

can't find anything on the site about what happened...

they would of been fine had they not shook it i guess ... oh well thats what happens when you do something and you don't know what your doing

This isn't much of a current event, but damn is it stupid!

I guarantee that kid had some sorta chemical burn or something from that explosion.

I had some friends back in high school who used to do the same thing. They didn't shake it up though, but let it fester inside the bottle & explode on its own.

Where'd they get the chlorine? Pool supply?

What idiots

You can even make a bottle bomb from baking soda and vinegar - much safer too.

We used to have rockets that were powered by vinegar and baking soda....good stuff!

Yes, that does look as dangerous as handing a lighter to a redneck at the local bean-n-beer festival.

The immaturity of youth and the need for experimentation. They always have that feeling of invinceability. Still not a smart move! Just glad that no one was hurt.

Does anyone know if the video if avaiable anywhere else for those that don't have WMA? Or should I just leave it to my imagination.

I wanted to say repost... but I couldn't believe that this hasn't been posted before...

I mean its been on every other Forum for weeks...

Ah well.

Seen it, and its good.

:D

after watching this video, the first thing that comes to mind is one of my favorite quotes i saw on bash.org. the site is down now, so i can't find it exactly, but it basically said "stupudity is a huge problem, i'm not saying there should be capital punishment for being stupid, but just take off all the safety labels and let it sort itself out." or something to that extent

What actually happened is that the dry pool chemical, Calcium hypochlorite (CaCl2O2) was mixed with some hard alcohol like vodka. It was the WATER in the alcohol (booze is at best 40% alcohol, the rest is water) that reacted with the chlorine. Calcium hypochlorite is highly reactive to water producing chlorine gas and oxygen gas. The explosion was caused by the rapid production of chlorine and oxygen gases increasing pressure on the walls of the bottle until it violently ruptured.

CaCl2O2 + H2O ->> Ca2+-ion + Cl2-gas + O2-gas

Based on the video I would guess the kids had about 50grams of dry chemical. That is about 1/2 mole of CaCL2O2. If all the chemical reacted, it would produce a full mole of gas or 22 liters. No wonder it ruptured a 1 liter bottle.

The kid probably didn't lose his arm, but he might have lost his thumb and a few fingers. He also probably had chemical burns all over his face and body.

NEVER NEVER NEVER allow pool chemicals to get slightly wet. Keep them in a totally dry location when stored.

ALWAYS add pool chemicals to large amounts of water–like add the dry directly to the pool.

Nice chem work there. I'm in chemistry now. Yes, I thought that because chlorine is an oxidizor it wouldn't react hardly at all with pure alcohol but since they were using regular 70% isopropyl (I would think) it reacted with the 30% water.

This method of making a bottle bomb is totaly stupid and pointless. Just use dryice and water. It looks cooler, and if you are near it when it explodes all you get is some water vapor on you.

And if you want to wreck someones car or house just use paint rather than water. :D

i'll have to keep that in mind... hahaha :D

I have heard of people using the big cans that the paint comes in then just putting in some peices of dry ice in and hammering on the lid. That would be good for lots of paint. But a bottle would just put a nice red mist over everything. :D Oh man that would suck.

Nicest things about dry ice bombs are that it makes a HUGE noise, better than an M80 and they more legal than firecrackers. I guess the only thing you could get into problems with is a noise complaint.

Don't take my word for it though. ;)

Heh, that reminds me of a New Years prank (hack by their terms) by a couple MIT students. They hurled a chunk of sodium (or was it calcium...) into the Charles River :D

If i remember my chemistry right ... sodium would start flaming, and calcium would start fizz. -- if that helps you remember :)

Which one would explode/make a big boom. Or maybe it was sodium....

Calcium dropped into a container of water would probably have similar effects on the bottle that the chlorine and alcohol did. Essentially just a pressure bomb. so if it was enclosed it would boom - but i guess if they threw blocks into the river then they weren't enclosed.

Sodium makes a very violent reaction in water, flames and such

Where else

Its on at www.stupidvideos.com and you can select it in Quicktime (wmv being default). Of course there are lots of other stupid vids on this site. I work in a biochemistry lab so I showed my boss, thats only the second time I've heard him use the F word!!!

I downloaded it (from above link) and tried to play it on windows media player and it said "unrecognised format" or words to that effect. What gives?
