I am trying to run NWN2 on an Intel based I-mac that I bought last August.

It installs successfully and I have added the latest patch. The game crashes upon launch. It appears the resolution changes then the game just crashes. I never see a single game screen.

I have searched all over the NWN2 forums and other forums but have not found a good answer. One poster suggests turning off the dual core. Others state there is no problem running the dual core.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

NWN2 is a good game, but incredibly horrible in terms of stability.

The main campaign is flawed and buggy, and I also remember having an issue where the disc copy protection did not allow me to run the game from my CD drive (I needed to use an external CD drive for some reason ><).

Sorry I can't help you much here, but yeah, NWN2 is soured by stability issues. Even if you get it working you'll be frustrated.

I have a 2.16 GHz MacBook Pro 15" with 2GB RAM and an external display, running OS X 10.5.5. This is a dual core CPU and the game runs on it OK, so whoever said dual core breaks NWN2 is wrong.

I had a crash-on-launch problem in which I never saw the UI, it just crashed on startup and the standard Apple crashed-app window appeared.

I looked for fixes and found advice related to the misaligned stack error I was seeing ("misaligned_stack_error"). It said to do this, which didn't fix the problem for me but might for you: "sudo update_prebinding -force"

I also did "verify disk" and "repair permissions" in Disk Utility and that didn't help.

What fixed it for me the first time it happened was reinstalling the OS via the "archive and install" option (making it less of a pain than an erase and install). This time just applying the 10.5.5 combo updater over my existing OS fixed it.

I should mention that I had no problems for months, and then switched laptops twice (sent the original in for repair, used a spare, then switched back) and used Carbon Copy Cloner 3 (which uses rsync for the actual copying of files) to clone my boot volume each time. NWN2 is the only thing that has given me problems, but I don't play any other games on my Mac so I can't speak to any finger-pointing instincts you might have.

So, anyway, it looks like NWN2 is "sensitive" to the OS being less than absolutely perfectly installed correctly. It's a pain, but it's probably worthwhile to try installing a fresh OS to an external drive and/or using the combo updater to re-install the same OS you already have, and see if NWN2 is happy after that.

Do you have integrated or discrete graphics? I know it *won't* work with integrated ... it ran 'ok' on both my first generation MBP (256MB x1600) and brand new MBP ... but it is almost like a 'Crysys test' ...
