Hi,

Saw that sonnet and gigadesigns have press releases about a new 1.7 single and maybe dual upgrades based on the 7447a cpu's.

These will not have l3 cache, so may not perform leaps and bounds above a 1.5 with 2mb l3, but it will be interesting to see don't you reckon?

The new 7448 cpu's freescale are working on should scale up to 2g and and are pin compatible with 7447's, so in the future we could well be looking at an upgrade path taking our older macs clock speeds faster than some of the g5 powermacs! Seeing as a g4 has better altivec than a g5, although less fsb bandwidth, it has to be a pretty good upgrade anyway. This may even possible lead in the direction of e600 upgrades for old powermacs and cubes etc.

Would be interested to see what other people think.

hopefully we'll see some iBook G4 upgrades, well, maybe not.
Doubt it as the Ibook processors are soldered directly onto the logic board. The powermac G4 processors are on separate processor daughter cards and are therefore easy to replace.

I've got a Dual 1GHz MDD and I'm watching these upgrades closely. Gigadesigns has a 1.42Ghz dual upgrade for MDDs but it's a bit pricey for the improvement. Now a dual 1.7GHz is sounding more interesting - except the current ones don't run on MDDs :(
