I need to get a new internal hard drive for my old iMac G5 (rev B - 17" 1.83ghz). I want to get a Western Digital internal, a fast, small(in capacity - I'll get a bigger external hard drive for much cheaper), and reliable (good cooling and long life).
That is, I'll get that if I know for certain it's the hard drive that failed on me. I don't know if it's the hard drive at fault, or the logic board, or what; but one day, it just suddenly froze on me opening up MS Word and I left it there for a few hours thinking that it would fix itself, but it didn't so I unplugged it and plugged it back in.. It was very slow after that and would freeze and I'd have to turn it off over and over until it wouldn't even turn back on without waiting 30 minutes on the Apple screen, and 10 minutes to login...now it's in the attic sitting there, as it's not turning on at all..just stuck at the apple boot logo.
Does that sound like it's the hard drive? If it is, then is there anything I should be looking for specifically to be compatible with this iMac (are there ones that will work and won't work)? Also, do you think the computer would last much longer even after buying a hard drive? I bought it in April 2005 and it broke over the summer of 08- got a new Aluminum iMac in sept. 08. I was very disappointed because 3 years is a very short life for a computer.. I was expecting it to last 5-6 years, 4 at the minimum.
Thanks.
