New 13" Air Setup Question...

Been away from Macs for quite some time but finally found a great deal on a 13" Air, Haswell model. I am coming from a full HD IPS panel so this screen is not real great but I wanted it due to the long battery life and portability. Planning to keep it until the Air's start using retina panels..if/when that happens.

Does Mavericks need any tweaks or is it pretty streamlined out of the box?

I'm not having any battery life issues but should I do the OS update that is available as well?

Is there any way to darken the text a bit? I've tried using the color calibrater under "Displays" but it didn't do much.

I really feel sorry for the horse though. It doesn't seem fair to the poor critter which should deserve a more respectful demise.
