Got my 16" this evening, the standard+ 1Tb SSD. I booted fine, created an account, and then started migration assistant from a SSD bootable clone of my old laptop (also running Catalina.)

Migration seemed to freeze after 10 minutes, the bar wasn't moving at all, so I canceled it, got a black screen+cursor, and then rebooted. Now it boots slowly, and when the progress bar gets to the end, I get about .5 second of really strong fan... and it reboots.
So... suggestions?

I think I read someone else having a similar problem during migration. I assume that the system did not get fully copied so it can’t boot, which I assume means you’re going to have to try and go into recovery mode

Reset PRAM, SMC. If that doesn't remedy, boot to the recovery system (hold CMD + R and press the power button) reinstall the OS. If that too fails call Apple get a new machine.

I would go directly to a recovery system boot, reformat, and reinstall. Once you have the new os installed, do not use migration assistant again.

I agree. I've always had issues with Migration Assistant in the past. I usually will backup my stuff via Time Machine to an external drive and then copy what i need to the new machine manually. Takes longer but i'd rather avoid the issues i've had with Migration Assistant.
