So, I bought a new 17 inch MBP tonight. When it started up, it made a very odd sound that was similar to a CD/DVD being processed or ejected. I thought maybe it was a one time thing, but since restarting it a few times, it's made the same sound each time.

Is this normal? I've never heard it before. It's like there's a CD or DVD in there, but of course there isn't.

Well then, that pretty much answers my question, though it leads to another one: What are those sounds about? Seems pretty unusual.

It's pretty much the sound of a CD being ejected.

Press the eject button or if that doesn't work, try: bring up the System Profiler (About my mac -> More Info) then under hardware go to 'Disc Burning'.

Or even easier, open up Disk Utility.

To what end, though?

If the sound is normal, there isn't to be much to done about it, right?

Yeah. Most slot loading CD/DVD drives make that sound. What end? Well to show you that the sound is replicable and normal. It's just a check to see if anything is in there.
