Today Intel released a new 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor. I'm planning to buy an imac Pro, but should I wait? Is this processor much better than the 1. generation? The imac pro got a small update last week so it is likely that it will take some time before apple updates the imac pro with this processor.

Apple will highly likely not use the Xeon SP in an iMac Pro. They currently use a Xeon W in that system. There will likely be a variant of this SP 2nd gen that will come to the Xeon W line up later this year (more leaks should start now and probably something more concrete from Intel by end of May), but it doesn't look like there will be major differences. ( some security fixes, a clock bump, minor opcode tweak perhaps. The snazzy Optane DIMM aspect of the new SP processors is a no-go for soDIMMs of the iMac Pro even if the W version gets it... which it may not. ).

Apple may refresh the iMac Pro with that later in the year if there are new GPUs to match, but if a new Mac Pro is taking up all of their limited attention span, then the iMac Pro could roll into 2020 before an upgrade.
