Given that I have read about, and experienced the fact, that the Apple Superdrive do not work on the new
thunderbolt 3 MBPs....what are the alternatives if I need to read Cd/DvD discs. I'm looking for something similar to the Superdrive...slip / portable and not requiring its own power supply.

Suggestions pls!!

Check Amazon... there are a number of inexpensive options... I got a no-name drive for under $25 that's solid.

Just about any 3rd-party USB external drive will do.

I'd suggest one that has tray-style loading (that is, via a "lift up" door or slide-out tray).
Yes, they seem "clunkier", but I consider them to be more reliable than a slot-loading drive.

If your main objective is just to read existing discs, almost any drive will do that.
IF you plan to use the drive to burn "archived" discs, I'd suggest you look at a drive that also has "M-DISC" capabilities. The M-DISCs use a "non-dye" recording material and have a much longer lifespan.

Got a bit scared because of this topic... but now that my MBP13 arrived i can say that the superdrive DOES work. with a USB-C Adapter of course.

Apparently Superdrives produced after 2010 will work.
