So I bought this monitor with mini displayport -> HDMI input. Everything is fine except for the fact that I now don't have use of the volume/brightness keys on my wireless apple keyboard.

Is there a program that will help me accomplish this? Thanks in advance.

Don't know much about it, but maybe the monitor's in ECO mode? That's said to disable those controls.

So I found a solution that works for me. I'm now able to use the keyboard volume keys to control volume output from my ASUS monitor. Download the app called Sound Siphon (demo available), install, and simply switch audio output to displayport using the menu bar screen (see attached). Works great!

Side note: I tried another app SoundFlower which didn't work for me, probably because it was retired 2 years ago but might still work for other people.
