new 4 core mac pro 3 ram slots?

hello has anyone tried to put three 4gb modules in the new 4 core mac pro? it says it only supports up to 8 gb but it seems there is enough space for 12gb? and what limits a machine to only 8gb?

We realize newbies don't always search, but someone who's been here a year really should know how to do so.
If search isn't an option, reading through the threads on the first page in this forum would be an acceptable substitute.
