Apple's latest retail location is set to open in Kyoto, Japan at 10:00 a.m. local time on August 25, the company announced today on its Apple Japan YouTube site and on a new page for the upcoming store.

The new Kyoto store will be Apple's ninth retail store in Japan, and the first that's located in Kyoto. Apple has several other stores in Tokyo, along with locations in Osaka, Aichi, Miyagi, and Fukuoka.

As Japanese site Mac Otakara points out Apple has created a new wallpaper to celebrate the launch of the Kyoto store, which is available for download here.

Apple Kyoto is located on the first floor of the Kyoto Zero Gate building, facing the famous Shinjo Street. Kyoto Zero Game is located next to the Daimaru Kyoto department store and it is a new building that was finished in 2017.

Just the ninth in such a densely populated country, with four of them in Tokyo! With top class service.

Yeah, just like I expect store employees to say "Welcome" when in the States.

Still waiting for an Apple Store in the Hiroshima area. One day I suppose...
the local apple store ignores people walking in, unless they look baffled

Nice to see that Apple is opening another location in central Japan. The location isn't bad (a few minutes' walk from Shijo-Karasuma station, or about 10–15 minutes' transit and walking time from Kyoto station), but Bic Camera right across from Kyoto station (https://www.biccamera.co.jp/shopguide/report/macshop/index.html) is still a more centrally-located place to look for and purchase Apple products in Kyoto, especially for people coming off and getting on the Shinkansen.

Oh wow, this is great! The Kyoto station area is a nightmare wasteland for anyone not explicitly on their way into or out of the city — Shijo is much more what would be considered “downtown.”

Surprised they opted for Kyoto when there’s one in Osaka, but given that I live in Kyoto, you sure won’t see me complaining that it’s no longer a two-hour trip each way if I need service. I’d have just expected, like, Kanazawa to get a store before Kyoto, simply for geographical distribution reasons.

Yes, Apple isn't well represented in terms of official stores in the Hokuriku area. I wonder what their criteria is for establishing a store in a certain region. Likely, population is a factor, as well as how high-profile the area is, how much foot traffic it gets and so on.

Yeah, I always forget that Kanazawa isn’t really that huge a city despite being the economic center of the region. I could definitely see an Apple store fitting right in in Korinbo though.

Kyoto: Ancient capitol of Japan. Really a great place to visit with its many temples and sites. One of the few cities that the allies spared from bombing during WWII. And soon to be the site of another Apple Store. :apple:

I know this will never happen given the current negative opinion of the city, but when I saw this site up for development for a totally glass enclosed type structure, I thought of Apple. It's next to the tallest tower between Philadelphia and Raleigh, NC, the Transamerica Building, yes, their East coast HQ in of all places, Baltimore. This location is close to basically all the richest young people in Baltimore, and also Oprah, who has a place across the harbor. It's directly across from Harborplace. You could actually visit this store by boat and just walk across the street! It's a block from the business district, and most importantly not close to much of any crime either.

This is a concept pic of the 2-3 story glass structure next to a very tall building, across from the water. They have no proposed tenants, who presumably will affect the design. This location has never been available for development before due to city zoning rules that have been changed. Why city planners originally thought large concrete empty plazas with a couple trees and benches would make people want to hang out there boggles my mind.
