Are we going to see a new Apple TV unveiled at the WWDC 2022?

Other than a rumored cheaper Apple TV, unlikely.

It took Apple 3.5 years to update Apple TV 4K. If the trend continues, the flagship Apple TV won't get another update until late 2024.

I doubt we will see another ATV refresh any time soon. The ATV is the stepchild Apple doesn’t seem to want. All they care about is generating money through the TV+ service as well as sales and rental revenue from content.

If you look to the past, there seems to be a pattern of iPhones rolling out a new resolution level (8K would be next), followed by iPads getting it within the next year and then a new AppleTV with the same resolution following that.

So with rumors of 8K video capabilities in the next iPhone in the Fall... leading to iPads probably going 8K over the next year, my guess would be Spring 2024 at the earliest for AppleTV 8K... IF both iPhone and iPads embrace 8K pretty broadly on about that schedule. If they do not, I'd roll out my expectations for a next AppleTV to follow iPads going 8K.

I'd further guess that the "cheaper AppleTV" rumored "soon" is a dongle designed to stream the AppleTV+ service vs. being a full AppleTV (hardware) at a much cheaper price. AppleTV+ is very much not a whole AppleTV (hardware) box. The latter has many more capabilities than streaming video.

So OP, if you want one, why not wait the few days to see if they surprise us all and then get yourself whichever AppleTV you actually want. They tend to have pretty good resale value so if you only keep it for a year+ before wanting to get the "next one", you can probably sell it for about HALF of retail such that you only spent about $8/month on it while you owned it.

iPhones don't even have QHD (2560 x 1440 px) screen resolution yet! My iPhone 13 Pro Max screen is only 2778 x 1284. That is only slightly better than full HD at 1920 x 1080, certainly not 4K resolution, and no where near 8K resolution. You can definitely view 4K and 8K video streams on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but you will only see them in less than QHD resolution. Perhaps you are confusing the camera resolution for screen resolution. They are NOT the same thing at all.

As far as upgrading the ATV 4K to an 8K model goes, don't hold your breath. Until 8K TV becomes the standard "new TV" resolution, Apple won't mess with 8K. They will wait until there are enough 8K TVs in homes to make it worth their wild to upgrade the ATV. Since 4k is just now becoming the norm, don't expect an ATV 8K for at least a few years, if ever. To stream 8K people will need a lot more bandwidth, so that has to become available as well.
