Hi Macrumors,

I've been working on and off on a new menubar application for the mac called GrowlVoice for a few months now. It's both free and open source, and you can find it along with a more detailed description of what it does here.

In short though, it’s an application for the mac that monitors your Google Voice account, and notifies you through Growl when you get new text messages, new voicemails, or miss calls. It also displays your current "unread" count directly in the menubar.

While there are some applications that exist for the Mac that attempt to interface with Google Voice in similar ways, I’ve never been happy with them. Either they rely on convoluted or 3rd party methods to get the notifications to you (sending messages to 3rd party email addresses, checking Google Voice in the cloud and sending you updates), or are bulky memory-hogging applications that attempt to mimic the functionality already present and well-implemented in the Google Voice site. What sets GrowlVoice apart from these other types of applications is that it connects securely and seamlessly with your Google Voice account from your computer, making the Google Voice website easier to use with prompt and detailed notifications, and doing it in a simple and out-of-your-face way. To take a deeper look at how how it accomplishes this, you can check out the code that makes it all happen here.

I'm still relatively early-on in development, but I've had a few of my friends using it and they all seem very happy with it. If you want to report any issues or bugs, you can either reply to this post or use the Google Code system for doing so.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you like GrowlVoice as much as I do.

Eric
