To my surprise, I don't see any discussion about this at all: I get that old apps on iPhone 5 will have black bars. But what about new apps on old iPhones - will the apps have to support two sizes?

There will be no more new apps for the older iPhones.

j/k

The bottom 1/5 of the app will be cropped off.

There is a scaling feature built into iOS 6, so I imagine apps will scale down to the iphone 4 screen, if they do not remain their current proportions.

app developers won't be foolish enough to only support the iPhone 5. They will make 2 different UI designs...a 4" version and a 3.5" one. It's much like when they make a universal app for iPad and iPhone

That only makes sense in some apps, a 16/9 game wouldn't work. Scaling is a really, really bad solution, it impacts image quality and strains the GPU. Obviously the developers can choose to support both, but does anyone know if they are required to?
